There has been yet another twist in the story of a Gauteng woman who is alleged to have given birth to a world record breaking 10 babies (decuplets) this week, with the Department of Social Development – who previously said that they had confirmed the sensational event had indeed taken place – saying on Friday evening that the baby’s mother has NOT been reported missing.

In a statement, the Gauteng Social Development department said that earlier reports suggesting that Gosiame Thamara Sithole is now the subject of a missing persons investigation are totally untrue.

Decuplet mother not missing, Social Development department confirms

In a statement, the Department said that the mother of the decuplets has been in touch with them and confirmed that she is safely recovering from her widely publicised birthing of the “Tembisa Ten” earlier this week.

“The Gauteng Department of Social Development wishes to confirm that the mother of the decuplets is not missing. She has contacted the Gauteng Department of social Development and the Department will make an announcement in due course,” they said.

The department said that the Provincial wing of the South African Police Service (SAPS) has been notified of this development.

They added that the department will not be taking interviews “until it is ready to do so”.

Missing mother reports untrue

News24 reported on Friday evening that they had been informed by reliable sources that the woman had been reported missing on Thursday 10 June.

When The South African reached out to Gauteng SAPS spokespeople, they informed us that they had no knowledge of any such missing persons report ever being filed. They said that they would provide more information regarding our enquiries when it becomes available.

On Thursday, reports emerged that the baby’s aunt said that the mother is under protection and hospital care in a place of safety while she and her ten children recover.

This is a developing story.
