Former rugby coach turned politician, Peter De Villiers, finds himself at the center of controversy as he faces a disciplinary hearing within the Good Party.

The suspension of De Villiers from the party has brought to light allegations of sexual harassment, prompting a thorough investigation into his conduct.

GOOD party takes action

According to the Sowetan Live the GOOD party is taking disciplinary action against De Villiers on Thursday 7 March.

The GOOD secretary-general Brett Herron confirmed in a report that the hearing will take place for two days and the party will communicate the findings of the hearing once they find the outcome.

These allegations came at a time where the party said its constitution was unambiguous on gender relations and gender-based violence.

According to the Sowetan Live Herron said “The allegations and prime face evidence against De Villiers do not create an assumption of guilt.”

Sowetan Live also reported that Herron mentioned that the party had appointed an independent deputy chair disciplinary hearing chair, advocate Lionel Esau, and an independent initiator to fulfil the prosecutorial function, advocate Peter Cyster.

De Villiers was served with a charge sheet on the 23 February, after he was accused of sexually assaulting a member of the party and was suspended with immediate effect.

Career of the former Springbok coach politician

De Villiers joined the GOOD party as a mayoral candidate in the Drakenstein Local Municipality in November 2021.

“Now I have the opportunity to serve the wider Western Cape community. I will use the same tools that have served me for many years: Listening to others, considering what they say, and being constructive in response,” de Villiers said when he was sworn in.

De Villiers resigned from his position in the council to spend time with his family following his wife’s death in April 2022. He still remained a member of the party and was nominated to return to the council in January 2023.
