DA’s Nelson Mandela Bay mayor to freeze ‘irregular’ multi-million Rand deal

Newly-elected mayor Athol Trollip is shaking things up in the official opposition’s new Eastern Cape metro, after discovering some pretty interesting contracts set in place before he took over.

It’s been brought to Trollip’s attention that the municipality had signed a multi-million Rand deal with Jozi-based Mohlahleng Media and that the municipality had given the company free reign to spend as much as they wanted, at the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality’s expense.

Having barely reached the halfway point in its three-year contract, Mohlahleng has already spent in the region of R20.8 million, while it was initially limited to R10 million max.

Trollip believe’s there’s something fishy going on and wants the deal put on hold, pending a complete investigation.

“I have today asked the City Manager to freeze the Municipality’s contract with Mohlaleng Media with immediate effect, and conduct a comprehensive investigation into the deal,” the mayor said in a statement on Wednesday.

“I was disturbed to learn that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality had spent in excess of R21-million on this contract, some of which was allegedly used to remunerate political appointments under the former administration.”

“I believe that there are adequate grounds to immediately freeze this contract and call for this immediate and urgent investigation to safeguard the institution and its reserves”.

“This administration will not tolerate irregular, wasteful or unnecessary expenditure, in any form, and any contract that is alleged to have facilitated any expenditure of this nature will be fully investigated and scrutinised,” Trollip said.
