Gauteng has been unveiled as the leader in hijacking cases in the country. Four areas within the provinces capital Tshwane, feature in the country’s top 30.

While Ivory Park police station in Ekurhuleni, recorded the highest number of hijackings, Loate, Mamelodi East, Olievenhoutbosch and Pretoria West, lead in the Tshwane metro.

This is according to the latest crime statistics leased by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday. The statistics recorded reported crimes between October and December 2023.

In the 90-day window period in review, there were a total of 5 973 cars hijacked around the country- 66 cars per day.

Gauteng accounted for half of the country’s hijacking cases with 3 010 cases reported.

Theses are the number of cases reported in the metro’s hotspot areas:

  • Loate- 67
  • Mamelodi East- 60
  • Olievenhoutbosch- 53
  • Pretoria West- 49

According to the statistics an overwhelming majority of the vehicles targeted by hijackers were passenger vehicles such as sedans/hatchback and coupes.

Top five vehicles hijacked:

  • Sedans/hatchback and coupes- 2 754
  • Bakkie/panel van- 1 824
  • Motorycle- 402
  • SUV- 387
  • Mini Bus- 314
