The recently released crime stats paint a bleak picture on the safety in school premises, due to the number of rape, murder and assualt cases reported

Safety concerns in educational facilities has been put into question following the release of the latest crime stats this week.

RAPE CASES IN EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES

According to the stats released by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday, 76 people were raped in places of learning while 10 others lost their lives.

These incidents took place in the three months between July and September 2023.

Educational facilities include, universities, primary and secondary schools and day care facilities as well as special schools. An overwhelming majority (61 cases) took place in schools.

However according to the report, the number of cases does not only point to learners but educators as well.

Of the 76 rape cases, 23 took place in KwaZulu-Natal, with 18 of the incidents occurring in schools. It was closely followed by Gauteng with 16 cases, 14 of which took place in schools.

Just last week the country came to learn of the stabbing incident at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology where a female student was attacked by her partner

In the three months reporting period 291 cases of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm were reported across the country. That equates to around 3 cases per day taking place at educational facilities.
