Teams globally are geared up for intense cricket battles during the thrilling spectacle of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

However, the Proteas’ World Cup journey concluded with a three-wicket defeat to Australia in Kolkata, India, marking their fifth miss of the 50-over World Cup final.

Recently, the South Africa Cricket Board revealed the Central Contract List for 2023–24, spotlighting the highest-paid of 16 Proteas players.

Temba Bavuma leads the ODI and T20I teams, and Dean Eldar guides the Test squad, according to Sports Unfold.

CRICKET WORLD CUP: WHICH PROTEAS EARN THE MOST?

The match fees for South African cricketers were revealed, complementing their Central Contract Retainer Fee.

  • Test Match Fee: $4,500-R82 700,01
  • ODI Match Fee: $1,200-R22 048.90
  • T20I Match Fee: $800-R14 699,96

Faf du Plessis, Quinton De Kock, David Miller, and Kagiso Rabada stand out as top earners in South African cricket.

They earn significantly from diverse avenues like franchise leagues, brand promotions, ads, and central contracts.

Remarkably, Faf du Plessis was excluded from the upcoming season’s Central Contract.

In the wider cricket scene, Chris Morris became a financial powerhouse, clinching the highest-paid player title in the 2021 IPL Auction, earning a staggering 16.25 INR.

Faf du Plessis retired from Test cricket but is open for ODIs and T20Is, not included in the 2023–24 South Africa Central Contract. Tabraiz Shamsi achieved the top ICC T20I Bowler rank.

WHAT ARE THE BASIC SALARIES?

South Africa’s leading players are on basic annual contracts ranging from approximately R1.2 million ($65 000) to R3 million ($160 000).

This amount can be doubled by match fees, bonuses, and commercial agreements, with a separate rights deal in place at a World Cup where the Proteas have been one of the form teams.

Even so, leading South African players earn less for playing for their country than by appearing in franchise cricket.

Kagiso Rabada earned $1.1 million from playing in the 2023 IPL, with in-form batsman Quinton de Kock, who plans to quit ODI cricket after the World Cup, earning some $810 000.
