Cosatu demands instatement of fired workers

Violence and criminality prevented Cosatu from handing over their memorandum of demands to City management on Friday

The Congress of South African Trade Unions(Cosatu) has called warned that Tshwane mayor Cilliers Brinks days at the helm in the capital are numbered.

The trade union, march to Tshwane House to hand over a memorandum of demands, which includes the reinstatement of the 123 dismissed municipal workers.

The workers had embarked on an unprotected strike and were dismissed after failing to report to work.

Despite agreeing to accept the memorandum, Brink did not avail himself to do so. Instead City Manager Johan Mettler was sent out to receive the memorandum

Cosatu President Zingiswa Losi has also called on the City to implement the wage increases as instructed by the Bargaining Council.

UNION CALLS FOR ENGAGEMENT WITH THE CITY

The union has called for genuine engagements to reinstate dismissed employees and honour the collective bargaining agreements to pay.

“Lack of respect for collective bargaining agreements must be challenged by workers across all sectors of the economy.

“Dismissal of workers at workplaces for raising labour disputes whilst the unemployment rate is ho high, isn’t sustainable”, she says.

According to TimesLive, Losi says that the days of DA run municipalities will soon come to an end. She has accused the City of segregating black workers and exploiting workers as glorified slaves.
