Remember when the news broke that acting Eskom CEO Matshela Koko had overseen the awarding over more than R1 billion to a company that his stepdaughter had just been made a director of? Well, it turns out that same company made a donation of around R1.7 million toward the ANC’s birthday bash a few months later.

In March it was reported that Koko claimed he had no idea his 26-year-old stepdaughter Koketso Choma was made a director of Impulse International – even though he lives in the same house as her – shortly before he started awarding the company contracts in excess of R1 billion.

This turned out to be a lie after the Sunday Times reported that Koko and Choma’s new boss had exchanged 52 phone calls – the first one the very day Choma started working at Impulse International – around the same time Choma got the director’s post.

Anyway, the DA has requested that the public protector — in addition to looking into the Koko/Choma/Impulse International matter – also take a look at the potential links between Koko, Choma and the ANC.

The Sunday Times over the weekend reported that over R1 million had been given to the ANC for it’s Orlando Stadium birthday bash by Impulse International, a donation that under normal circumstances would have looked perfectly innocent.

“The Public Protector must now investigate and expose what the relationship between Koko, Choma, Impulse and the ANC really is,” DA MP Natasha Mazzone said.

“It cannot be accepted that so much public money was allegedly improperly directed toward family insiders of the acting CEO of Eskom, only to land in the hands of the ANC.”

Eskom board chairperson Khulani Qoma, however, told Fin24 that the claims are baseless.

“The allegations remain allegations… The allegations in any event are not verified themselves,” he said.
