Community patroller killed in hail of bullets

A 58-year-old community patroller was killed in a hail of bullets at his house in Zwelisha, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday evening.

According to Reaction Unit SA (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram, the man was driving out of his yard to conduct patrols when his white Toyota Corolla was fired upon multiple times.

THE MAN WAS ON HIS WAY TO CONDUCT PATROLS WHEN HE WAS SHOT

“Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched and, on arrival, discovered the man in his yard covered in a blanket. He was shot multiple times and succumbed to his injuries.

“The critically injured man managed to exit the vehicle but collapsed in his yard. Ten (10) 9mm spent cartridges were recovered.”

HE WAS SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES

Balram said the shooting happened around 22:34 on Saturday.

“The motive for the shooting has not been established.”

EARLIER ON SATURDAY A ‘TAXI BOSS’ WAS SHOT AND INJURED IN DRIVE-BY SHOOTING

Meanwhile, earlier on Saturday, a Taxi boss was shot and injured in a drive-by shooting in Southridge.

“A taxi boss and his passenger were shot in a drive-by shooting at the Old Inanda Road and Jabu Ngcobo Road intersection in Southridge.”

Balram said members of RUSA were called out to a service station in the area at approximately 19:27 after a bullet-riddled white VW Polo drove into the premises.

THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER WERE SHOT

“On arrival, Reaction Officers were informed that the driver and passenger were shot. They were expedited to the hospital in a minibus taxi prior to the arrival of RUSA Members. Several spent rifle cartridges were recovered at the intersection.”

He said details leading up to the shooting and the extent of the victim’s injuries have not been confirmed at this stage.
