City of Tshwane employee shot and hijacked after his shift

The City of Tshwane says the strike by SAMWU employees has degenerated to thuggery after an employee was allegedly shot and hijacked.

The City of Tshwane has condemned the alleged attack of one its employees who was allegedly shot and hijacked after completing his shift.

The incident reportedly happened on Saturday night, 11 August 2023.

CITY OF TSHWANE EMPLOYEE ALLEGEDLY SHOT

The municipality said a standby team from the Water and Sanitation Section was working in Montana, Region 2, when they were confronted by a group of men who intimidated and instructed them to stop working.

The team reportedly ignored them and continued to render the service.

The City of Tshwane said upon completing the shift, the standby team leader was shot and hijacked, he was then rushed to hospital.

City Manager John Mettler has condemned the incident and urged law enforcement officers to find the suspects.

“We will not cower in the face of intimidation by thugs. If the perpetrators are found to be our employees they will be booted out of the employ of the city,” he said.

Meanwhile at least 93 employees who are members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) have been fired for participating in the strike which was declared unlawful and unprotected.

SAMWU members took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction over the 0% wage and salary increase for 2023-2024 passed by the council, among other issues.

The workers continued with the action prompting threats from the city management that they would be identifying those who had taken part, and they could face dismissal.
