Charlotte Maxeke Hospital fire reignites, patients evacuated

Firefighters are at the scene, battling the blaze.

The Gauteng Health Department confirms the fire that started at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital on Friday morning, 16 April, has reignited.

City of Johannesburg firefighters are on scene battling the blaze. Spokesperson Kwara Kekana confirmed that the blaze affected the hospital’s dispensary. The blaze was contained but reignited in the evening.

“We are also looking at evacuating patients from the hospital to other facilities within the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital Cluster”.

GP Infrastructure reported that authorities had been notified as “thieves were beginning to take advantage of the situation. Two cars have already been stolen”.

No casualties or fatalities have been reported at the time of publishing. Kekana said the department of health will provide updates as and when it becomes available.
