Limpopo Police have refuted claims that a hijacking incident at a toll gate that was captured on video took place in Nyl Plaza, the province.

The video clip, circulating on social media, shows three men alighting from a white motor vehicle at a toll gate, approaching another car that stopped behind, and committing what looked like a robbery or hijack. The accompanying information stated that the incident took place at Nyl plaza.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident did not occur at the Nyl Plaza toll gate or any toll gates in Limpopo.

Spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said although the video clip seems authentic, it did not take place in the province. All police stations under whose precincts the four toll gates resort did not receive any report of a carjacking.

Malesela said even if the victim has presumably not reported the incident, the structural setup shown on the video clip is not the Nyl Plaza toll gate.

Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, said the N1 is one of the busiest roads that pass through the province and, together with other law enforcement agencies, have heightened deployments along this road, especially during this Festive period.

“Officers deployed next to these toll gates could not have missed such a serious incident,” she said.
