The City of Cape Town is being accused of exceeding sewage limits. ActionSA files criminal charges for alleged violations of the Coastal Management Act.

Cape Town is facing accusations of exceeding permitted sewage levels into the ocean, according to EWN.

CAPE TOWN FACES CRIMINAL CHARGES FOR ALLEGED SEWAGE VIOLATION

According to reports, ActionSA says they filed a criminal charge under the Integrated Coastal Management Act.

According to a permit, the city is allowed five million litres per day, but ActionSA claims excess sewage was discharged from the Hout Bay outfall on 104 days in the first six months of this year.

Michelle Wasserman, ActionSA provincial chairperson, alleges the city breached the 2019 permit.

She said that on six of those days, the city released more than double the allowed amount of sewage into the ocean.

“The city failed to adhere to many of the requirements of the 2019 permit, including exceeding the permitted effluent quantity limit, the permitted effluent quality limit, monitoring requirements, reporting requirements and the requirement to improve the effluent quality. “

Zahid Badroodien, City Mayco member for water and sanitation, notes that Minister Barbara Creecy reduced the permitted sewage amount in 2019, with the city appealing the decision.
