Weather impact: These 16 Cape Town areas are experiencing electricity faults

Severe weather conditions in Cape Town have led to electricity faults in 16 areas, causing disruptions and outages.

The City of Cape Town’s Electricity teams are working around the clock to address the surge in electricity service requests related to the heavy rainfall and strong winds in the metro on Wednesday, 14 June.

Electricity infrastructure in multiple areas has been damaged by the inclement weather, prompting the deployment of teams to handle issues on the ground. More rain is expected on Wednesday evening.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rain in the metro and Cape Winelands, which is valid until midnight on Thursday.

Several suburbs in the metro are currently grappling with electricity faults due to adverse weather conditions, including flooding and tripping following load shedding.

The impacted areas include:

  • Philippi
  • Mfuleni
  • Seawinds
  • Kosovo
  • Newlands
  • Vasco Estate
  • Somerset West
  • Strand
  • Gordon’s Bay
  • Waterkloof
  • Kenilworth
  • Parow
  • Kuils River
  • Oakdale
  • Fish Hoek
  • Hout Bay

HOW TO REPORT A FAULT

Beverly van Reenen, the Cape Town MayCo Member for Energy, said prolonged outages being experienced are largely due to the severity of the storm damage.

“In more severe cases, we are not able to provide residents with a restoration turnaround time due to the complexity of faults or repairs. We ask residents to please use of the correct service channels to report outages via email and SMS,” said van Reenen.

Cape Town residents are asked to only submit one service request as duplication may cause delays.
