Emergency crews in Cape Town have been dispatched to an area above Camps Bay High School, after a veld fire was spotted on Thursday afternoon. The first reports of the blaze emerged just before 16:30. No injuries have been listed, but disruption is likely to continue late into the evening.

Camps Bay fire – what we know so far

Former DA Councillor for the area Jacques Weber confirmed that flames and smoke had been seen next to Clifton Road – the busy route connects the scenic beaches of Clifton with the residential areas of Sea Point. Teams from the local fire department and Table Mountain National Park are currently on the scene.

The fire season has been relatively calm for Cape Town, but there have been a couple of incidents to report up Signal Hill in 2020. Fires near the Noon Gun and on the stretch to Lion’s Head were extinguished without any problems to report. However, it seems the plumes of smoke are having a more serious impact here.

Cape Town traffic latest updates for Thursday 16 January:

The Kloof Nek road has been closed to traffic. Police have arrived on the scene to help mitigate the traffic during the afternoon rush hour. Many travellers on the M62 are also facing reduced visibility. In a smaller incident on the N2, another bush fire has been reported, with those using the outbound lane near Groote Schuur and people driving on Browning Road worst-affected:

“Veld fire above Camps Bay School. All services are now dispatching. Kloof Nek Road in Clifton has been closed to all traffic. The chopper and multiple engine pumps on the scene.”
