A 31-year-old man is appearing in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 13 June, for allegedly helping convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester escape from prison.

Police arrested another Bester accomplice in Johannesburg

The man was arrested in Johannesburg on Sunday. He faces a charge of helping an inmate escape from lawful custody.

National South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the Zimbabwean man would likely face more charges. Nine people, including Bester, have been arrested for their alleged role in the escape thus far.

The police said the possibility of more arrests in the Thabo Bester escape case could not be ruled out.

The eight suspects previously arrested are Bester, Nandipha Magudumana, Senohe Matsoara, Zolile Cornelius Sekeleni, Teboho Lipholo, Motanyane Masukela, Tieho Frans Makhotsa and Nastassja Jansen.

As previously reported, Sekeleni and Jansen are out on bail. The others remain in custody. All accused are due back in court on 20 June. The case was postponed for further investigation.
