Officials at the Killarney International Raceway have confirmed they will investigate an incident which led to the death of a popular drag race enthusiast. Shaheed Mugjenkar, a doctor local to Cape Town, was killed when he lost control of his high-performance vehicle.
Doctor dies during daredevil drag-race
Dr. Mujenkar has been described as a very experienced racer, and those who are familiar with the circuit remain baffled about what led to this tragic incident. It’s since been established that the car veered from one side of the strip to the other, before rolling multiple times.
There was then a collision with the safety barriers. Medics rushed to treat the victim, and although he was taken to hospital, there was nothing that could be done to revive Dr. Mujenkar. Motorsport South Africa (MSA) confirmed that a probe is now underway.
“The Motor Sport South Africa (MSA) Drag Racing event at Killarney International Raceway on Saturday 16 July was stopped after a crash. Dr. Shaheed Mugjenkar lost control of his Opel Kadett drag racing car after the finish line. An investigation has been launched.”
“The car veered across the drag strip and rolled over several times before hitting the safety barriers, ultimately landing on its side. Sadly, we have since been informed by hospital staff that he succumbed to his injuries later during the day with his family present at the hospital.”

Meanwhile, video footage of the incident has also made its way online. Though not graphic, it does capture the deceased’s final moments as the car spins out of control. A fair distance away from the starting grid, the vehicle can be seen wobbling from one side to another.
The car then flips, staying briefly airborne, before smashing into the barriers. A hush from the crowd is soon broken by those who realise what they’ve just witnessed. The clip ends as marshals begin to co-ordinate their response – and you can see it all here.
