This isn’t what we would call dutiful service. A Tshwane cop has landed himself in boiling-hot water this week, after he was caught on camera trying to solicit a bribe from a motorist on the N1. City Mayor Randall Williams has moved to condemn the incident on Monday.
Bribery on the N1: Motorist records ‘corrupt’ exchange’ with Tshwane cop
In a video shared online, the dashcam footage of the civilian captures a two minute conversation he has with the Tshwane cop. In the illicit discussion, the pair can be heard negotiating how they would sort a bribe out. A fee of R1 000 is then agreed.
The officer, oblivious to the fact he’s being recorded, tells the driver to use an ATM at a nearby garage, in order to withdraw the money and hand it over to him. It’s one of the more blunt and unsophisticated bribery attempts we’ve ever seen. Of that, we’re sure.
Officer allegedly ‘fled the scene’ after being exposed by dashcam
Anti-crime advocate Yusuf Abramjee distributed the clip online. He was also given more information about the incident – including its aftermath. According to Mr. Abramjee, the motorist revealed to the Tshwane cop that the WHOLE charade had been caught on his dashcam.

Even the mayor says you’ve messed up…
The footage has been viewed thousands of times, and it continues to spread like wildfire on social media. Mayor Williams has describe the Tshwane cop’s conduct as ‘disappointing’, and he has urged the motorist in question to provide authorities with more details
