The Warere Beach Hotel in Zanzibar has assurred holidaymakers it takes the safety of women seriously, after a young woman revealed she was nearly raped inside her hotel room by a mystery man. Zainab Oladehinde had booked into the swanky beach front hotel in April 2021 for her 23rd birthday.

In a Twitter thread that has since gone viral, Oladehinde says she was asleep inside her hotel room, which she had made sure was locked, when she was awakened by a naked man who had been touching her breasts and had placed her hands on his penis. She herself was also not clothed during the ordeal.

She then told the man she was HIV positive, a lie she hoped would deter him from going ahead with the sexual assault, but it didn’t. Oladehinde continued pleading, asking him to wear a condom. He then left to go and fetch a condom, which was her chance to escape. Before rushing to the room of a fellow holidaymaker, Oladehinde called the hotel reception area, but to no avail.

ZANZIBAR HOTEL: ‘WE TRIED OUR BEST TO SUPPORT’

The Zanzibar hotel has caught quite some heat on social media and was accused of not offering much-needed support to Zainab Oladehinde, during her time of distress. Angry potential customers have been flooding the Warere Beach Hotel’s social media pages, demanding answers as to why it didn’t prioritise her safety, but it insists it did come to her at, or at least attempt to.

“As a woman-owned and operated business, the Warere takes guest safety and the safety of single women travelers extremely seriously, as evidenced by 6 years of verified positive reviews from women all over the world”

“We tried our best to support Ms Zainab Oladehinde as soon as we learned of the accusations. We immediately brought her to the police and offered her support. The case was brought before Government authorities in April 2021 when it occurred. The police report indicated that this was a personal case, and not negligence on the part of the Warere”
