Three South African cities now rank among the 20 most violent in the entire world – at least according to Mexican Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice.

Business Tech reports that the council listed 50 cities and ranked them according to the number of murders, per 100 000 people. However, only cities with populations exceeding 300 000 people were included on the list.

WHICH LOCAL CITIES ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS?

According to the council, which is described as a “collegial citizen body for consultation” and supervision in matters of public security and justice, Cape Town, Durban and Gqeberha (Nelson Mandela Bay) are now among mostly North and South American cities considered the most dangerous.

Cape Town ranks in number 12 (2,998), Durban is on 15 (2,405 murders) and Gqeberha is ranked 18th (687 murders).

Johannesburg also made the list, but only came in number 34 with 2,547 murders.

Cape Town, which has 4.7 million citizens, has a murder rate of 63 per 100 000 people. Durban, which has a population of just over 4 million, has a murder rate of 59 per 100 000 people. For Gqeberha, which has 1.2 million people, the murder rate sits at 56 per 100 00. Joburg has a murder rate of 41 per 100 000 people (the city has more than 6 million people)
