In a unique approach to New Year’s Eve, General Fannie Masemola, the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), is not just wishing for celebrations but setting the tone for responsible revelry.

With an emphasis on safety, General Masemola encourages citizens to avoid lawlessness during the festivities.

“While celebrating the ushering in of the New Year, let us all be responsible in the way in which we celebrate. Monitor your alcohol consumption and don’t drink and drive,” said Masemola.

Midnight deployment: SAPS & law enforcement operations

As the clock ticks towards midnight, SAPS, alongside other law enforcement agencies, is deploying multidisciplinary operations for heightened visibility.

From roadblocks to compliance inspections at liquor outlets and firework sellers, the focus is on maintaining order. General Masemola issues a cautionary note on fireworks, urging communities to use them responsibly and keep them away from children.

However, it’s not just about fireworks; the Commissioner stresses responsible drinking and staying vigilant against potential crimes.

General Masemola’s warning: New Year offenders face jail

A stern warning echoes through General Masemola’s statement, emphasising that those found on the wrong side of the law won’t just face arrest but will spend the New Year in police holding cells.

In an unprecedented move, General Masemola, alongside Deputy National Commissioner for Policing Lt Gen Tebello Mosikili, will personally monitor New Year’s Eve celebrations in Gauteng’s hotspots.
