Govt: Riverlea mine shafts to be closed by NEXT MONTH

The community of Riverlea is up in arms over illegal mining and has threatened to take the law into their own hands

The Department of Mineral Resources has assured residents of Riverlea in Johannesburg that mine shafts will be closed by September.

The area has been the scene of violence recently after suspected rival illegal miners clashed. Nearly two dozen suspected illegal miners were gunned down in what is reported to be a turf war at the Zamimpilo Informal Settlement.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa is meeting with ministers in the security cluster to discuss illegal mining in the country.

AN END TO ILLEGAL MINING IN RIVERLEA

Chief Director in the Mineral Resources, Andries Moatsi has told the Riverlea community that they are hard at work taking on illegal mining in the area.

“What I stand here to confirm minister and to the community of Langlaagte and Riverlea is that the holes, after the second week that is the 18th the process to close all holes will happen. And definitely by the mid end of September, all shafts will be closed definitely,” Moatsi said.
