Political donations: R58 MILLION pumped into THESE parties

Some of the country’s biggest political parties raked in millions in donations in the first quarter – here are their biggest donors

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has released its latest report, which shows just how much political parties received in donations in the first quarter of the current financial year.

According to the IEC, a whopping R58 million was donated, which is significantly higher for the reporting period in comparison to previous quarters. 

“The total amount declared by the four (4) political parties is R 58 365 321.09 (fifty-eight million three hundred and sixty-five thousand three hundred and twenty-one rand and nine cents) for the reporting quarter. This total amount includes a late donations declaration of R 1 300 000.00 (one million three hundred thousand), which consists of three separate donations received by a particular party during the third and fourth quarters of the previous financial year”

REVEALED: HOW MUCH DID POLITICAL PARTIES RECEIVE?

According to the IEC, four political parties received the biggest donations: ActionSA, African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA) and a newly registered Build One South Africa (BOSA).

  • The DA received the highest donations, with R22 million received in the first quarter
  • The second highest declaration is made by the ANC, which was R20 million
  • ActionSA made the third-highest declaration of just over R12 million
  • Build One SA (BOSA) made a declaration of R2 000 000, plus a late declaration of R1.3 million

A large chunk of the DA’s donations come from an entity called Fynbos Ekwiteit (Pty) Ltd, which gave the party R15 million. The DA’s two other significant donations were received from an entity called Main Street 1564 at R5 million and a man known as Mr G Ryan, who donated R2 million, the IEC said.

Meanwhile, the ANC received R15 million from Batho Batho Trust and the remainder was received from Chancellor House Trust at R5 million. Both these entities are regular donors to the party.

An individual known as Victoria Freudenheim donated R7.2 million to ActionSA, which is a large bulk of what the party received overall.

“Two other large donations of R 2 million each were received from an entity known as Solomon David Group (Pty) Ltd.  The other coming from the party leader, Mr Herman Mashaba, made in two tranches. Style Eyes of California (Pty) Ltd, another regular donor to the party, made a notable donation of R 700 000 during the reporting quarter,” the IEC said.

Mmusi Maimane’s newly registered Build One SA party received its only declared donation of R 2 000 000 from Mr Martin Paul Moshal. However, the IEC added that three donations totalling R1.3 million were declared late – billionaire Rob Hershov donated R100 000, Hlumelo Biko (son of struggle hero Steve Biko) gave R200 000 while an entity called RTH Investments (Pty) Ltd donated R1 million.
