Shooting: 61-year-old Phoenix man shot in home robbery

Police are investigating a case of robbery and attempted murder after the latest Phoenix shooting that left a man critically injured.

A 61-year-old Phoenix man was shot and critically injured in a house robbery on Thursday night. 

Emer-G-Med paramedics spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said that paramedics had responded to the scene of the house robbery at about 21:30 on Thursday night.

“Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to a shooting incident in Wheatbrook Avenue, in the Brookdale area of Phoenix.” Van Reenen said.

Van Reenen said that when paramedics arrived at the scene of the shooting they found the gunshot vicim in a critical condition. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Van Reenen said that advanced life support intervention was needed to stabilise the man.

“He was placed onto a mechanical ventilator to assist him with breathing, and transported rapidly to a nearby hospital for further medical care,” he said.

He said reports from the scene had indicated that armed robbers had allegedly confronted the man in his home. They had then allegedly shot the man in the abdomen.

Police investigate robbery and murder after shooting

According to a report in IOL the police confirmed that they are investigating a case of robbery and attempted murder following the shooting incident.

According to IOL, a police spokesperson confirmed that the man had alleged that on December 9 2021, at 21:00, he and his father were seated outside their home in Wheatbrook Road, Brookdale in Phoenix when two men entered the property.

“They approached them with firearms and robbed the complainant of his cell phone. His 61-year-old father then screamed for help and one of the suspects shot him in the abdomen before fleeing the scene. He was then transported to hospital for medical attention,” the spokesperson told IOL.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident in Glenwood on Thursday, SAPS spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said that an alleged hijacker shot himself in the leg after he kidnapped a motorist drive off in his vehicle. The motorist fought back and pulled up the handbrake moments before the suspect shot himself in the leg. He was taken to hospital under police guard and has been charged with kidnapping, hijacking and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
