The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) slammed a Tshwane club for reckless advertising that encouraged students to spend their NSFAS allowances on alcohol.

CLUB SLAMMED FOR ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO USE NSFAS MONEY

“The club published posters offering discounts for alcohol for its Student Night Wednesday, adding the punchline – NSFAS INGENILE – literally meaning NFSAS has landed.

“Such advertising which preys upon students from poor backgrounds who receive NSFAS funding to buy food, learning materials and to take care of their living expenses is utterly reckless and irresponsible,” said the union.

SADTU said the Europa Lounge’s conduct is immoral and called on NSFAS to tighten controls over where students spend their allowances.

The night club eventually deleted the social media post in question following the backlash.

SADTU urged the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa and the Advertising Regulatory Board to look into the matter to ensure the country’s advertising is ethical with a sense of responsibility to consumers and society.
