Four suspects wanted for serious and violent crimes shot dead

Suspects on the most wanted list for murder, hijackings, armed robberies, and extortion were shot dead in a shoot-out with police

Police in Mariannhill has opened an inquest after four suspects wanted for serious and violent crimes were shot dead in St Wendolins on Thursday, 29 December.

Suspects killed in shoot-out with police

Under the banner of “Operation Qondisa,” members of the Rapid Rail Police Unit (RRPU) and the Provincial Investigations and Tracking Task Team were investigating a gang suspected of being responsible for a string of murders in the province.

The four suspects were seen driving down Higginson Highway in St Wendolins in a white vehicle.

Police ordered them to stop.

Instead of following police orders, the perpertrators opened fire on officers. The four suspects were killed during the gunfight.

Investigations revealed that the perpetrators were on the most wanted list for a variety of serious and violent crimes.

This including murder, attempted murder, hijackings, armed robberies, and extortion.

Police found an AK47 assault rifle with one magazine and 19 rounds of ammunition, as well as a stolen vehicle.

Inside the vehicle, ink-stained banknotes were discovered.

During the gun battle, no police officers were injured and all role players, including the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), were summoned to the scene for further investigation.
