Dr Mpho Phalatse has announced her resignation as a PR Councillor for Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Johannesburg.

In her resignation letter to DA Caucus leader Belinda Echeozonjoku, Phalatse described her various roles in public service as fulfilling and an honour.

“When I came into mainstream politics in 2016, I was motivated by the desire to serve. That decision came at a huge personal sacrifice and sacrifice of my family. I left my medical profession and thriving business in order to contribite to the rebuilding of my country,” she said.

PHALATSE: ‘MY RECORD SPEAKS FOR ITSELF’

Reflecting on the various hats she has worn in politics, most notably being Johannesburg’s mayor, Dr Mpho Phalatse said she was grateful for the opportunity to serve.

“I am very proud of the achievements we have had during my tenure as an MMC, the Executive Mayor and an ordinary Councillor. My record speaks for itself,” Phalatse said.

FORMER JOBURG MAYOR RETURNING TO MEDICINE

After much thought, Phalatse said the changing political and economic climate prompted her to reconsider her future as a councillor, which then led to her decision to leave.

“I have come to the conclusion that as a qualified medical doctor with vast experience in healthcare and beyond, I could make a better, meaningful and invaluable contribution elsewhere”

Her resignation as councillor is effective from 30 September 2023. She has had two stints as Joburg mayor, but was ousted in motions of no confidence spearheaded by opposition parties in the council. In April, she also lost her bid to become the DA’s leader to John Steenhuisen.
