There were scenes of abject chaos inside a Spanish nightclub earlier this week, when a gunman opened fire at the Opium establishment in the party town of Marbella. South African DJ Black Coffee was due to perform his set, before bullets rained down on revellers.

As it stands, five people have been injured in the carnage, with at least one person in a critical condition. The first shots were fired just after 1:00 on Monday morning, sparking a frenzy amongst the guests. Some parts of the nightclub experienced a stampede, and exits were soon crammed.

Black Coffee wasn’t the only high-profile name on the guestlist, either: The King of Spain’s nephew was also in attendance, and the royal relative was forced to flee for his life. A Dutch ‘Love Island’ contestant was also present, but none of the aforementioned celebs were hurt in the incident.

Meanwhile, it’s understood that the gunman himself was subdued by security shortly after he first pulled the trigger. He was stabbed several times, including one wound to the head. The shooter is also receiving critical care inside a Marbella-based hospital.

What caused the Marbella nightclub shooting?

As reported by the Daily Mail, the shooting is believed to have occurred during a fight between two groups of revellers in a VIP area of the beach club after a man was thrown out moments earlier by bouncers.

The immediate aftermath was caught on camera, and scores of scared patrons can be heard shouting expletives and screaming as they try to escape the venue. Some fall to the floor, as others continue their charge towards safety. A police investigation is already well underway.
