ELDERLY MAN DIAGNOSED WITH ‘HAIRY TONGUE’

The jawdropping case is detailed in the New England Journal of Medicine, which states that the 64-year-old had reported to a doctor just several weeks after his ice cream licker started changing colour and was growing hair.

He was subsquently diagnosed with a hairy tongue, which is a condition that occurs when there is a build up of dead skin cells on the tiny projections that contain taste buds.

According to the American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM), the condition affects 13% of Americans.

RARE CONDITION ‘NOT HARMFUL

Hairy tongue isn’t harmful and is generally a temporary condition. Doctors have also said that those who had hairy tongue in the past are more likely to develop it again in the future.

The elderly man was advised by doctors to scrub the surface of his tongue with a toothbrush at least four times a day. In six months, the man’s tongue went back to normal, even though he reportedly continued smoking.
