Eskom has announced that load shedding has been reduced to stage 4 as of 05:00 on Friday, 27 January 2023. The embattled power utility, which has been struggling to keep the lights on, says the implementation will continue until further notice.

“Loadshedding will be reduced to Stage 4 from 05:00 on Friday morning until further notice. A full statement will be issued as soon as there any further developments,” said Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha.

For now, it isn’t as to what exactly prompted the move to stage 4 load shedding, but Eskom said it would give further details in that regard. The power utility is now under immense pressure to improve generation capacity. The recent bouts of load shedding have led to growing concerns about its impact on the country’s economy.

Eskom is already facing court action from some political parties, labour unions and other groups over the energy crisis.

Earlier this week, the parastatal said stages 4 and 5 load shedding would be rolled out for the rest of the week due to breakdowns at some of its power stations.

“Due to the breakdown of a generating unit each at Camden, Kendal, Lethabo and Majuba power stations over the past 24 hours, loadshedding will increase to Stages 4 and 5 for the remainder of the week, starting at 05:00 on Thursday morning,” Eskom said at the time.
