A manhunt has been launched by security officials in the Canelands region of KZN, after one-time Mayor of Verulam Manna Naidoo was allegedly abducted as part of a rushed farm attack on Wednesday.

Former Mayor targeted during alleged farm attack

Naidoo, aged 72, was previously elected to serve his community – but the politician-turned-farmer is now banking on assistance from local law enforcement agencies. Officers from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) have since deployed aerial support.

The R44 chopper is now circling the suburb, and the search could be extended later this afternoon. Officers who arrived at the scene noticed that four firearms were stolen from the safe, and Naidoo’s house keys were still at the property. His Toyota Hilux had also gone missing.

Ex-Verulam Mayor, Manna Naidoo, reported missing

RUSA remain puzzled by the disappearance of the ex-mayor, given that roads leading to the farm have been extensively damaged by recent floods in KZN. Security teams had to abandon their vehicles and walk several hundred metres to the victim’s house.

  • The Unit has also issued a statement on the matter, confirming some key details and providing further updates on the search:

“Naidoo’s emotional family contacted Reaction Unit South Africa at 12:29 for assistance after they discovered his home on Panere Farm unlocked and four firearms missing from the safe.”

“His white Toyota Hilux single cab bakkie with registration NJ 777 cannot also be located. Reaction Officers conducted a search of the property and located his house keys left behind at the premises.”

“The farmer lived alone. His family last made contact with his daughter yesterday afternoon at 16:30. An extensive search is currently underway for the former Verulam Mayor.”
