6.2 magnitude earthquake shakes northern Japan, following Gauteng’s rumble

A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Sunday after Gauteng experienced its own tremors.

A strong earthquake hit Japan on Sunday, 11 June, hours after Gauteng was rattled by one, the US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed.

Japan Hit by Strong 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake, No Tsunami Alert Issued

According to AFP, the Japanese earthquake struck Hokkaido Island at 18:55 local time (09:54:45 UTC). The Japanese Meteorological Agency said there was no tsunami alert in the wake of the quake.

As previously reported, the Gauteng earthquake hit at approximately 2:38 local time (00:38:52 UTC). The USGS measured recorded it as having a magnitude of 5.0.

Gauteng Quake Confirmed, Epicenter Outside East Rand Mine

The local Council for Geoscience (CGS) confirmed the quake, recording it with a magnitude of 4.4, according to the South African Seismograph Network (SANSN).

“The epicentre was located in the Boksburg area a few kilometres outside East Rand Proprietary Mine (ERPM), in the East Rand of Johannesburg,” said the CGS.

Earlier reports put the earthquake epicentre nearer to Alberton. According to the USGS, it was somewhere six kilometres south-south-east of the East Rand town.
