Durban motorists awoke to chaos along many major routes across the city as protesters, believed to be Jacob Zuma supporters, heeding a call for a shutdown, blocked roads including the N2 and stoned vehicles on the N3 on Friday morning.
Reports and videos of the protest action, which is believed, although at this stage unconfirmed, to be linked to Jacob Zuma supporters’ anger over his incarceration on Wednesday night, were shared widely on social media on Friday. The protest action follows a meme that circulated on social media yesterday calling for a shutdown of businesses and shops. Jacob Zuma started serving his 15 months sentence in the Estcourt Prison late on Wednesday night after being found guilty of the crime of contempt of court in the Constitutional Court last week.
