Police in Jouberton and Potchefstroom arrested four suspects, tackling illegal possession of weapons and ammunition.

In a concerted effort to enhance safety and combat the illicit spread of firearms, police and law enforcement in Jouberton and Potchefstroom have apprehended four suspects for illegal possession of weapons and ammunition in separate incidents.

In the first incident, on Wednesday afternoon, 27 December 2023, police in Jouberton arrested 32-year-old Ditaba Matjobe for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Acting on credible information, authorities traced Matjobe to a residence in Extension 11, resulting in his arrest.

A Lesotho National, Matjobe appeared before the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 28 December 2023, and remains in custody pending verification of his immigration status.

Police nabbed Potchefstroom duo with stolen property

In an unrelated incident in Potchefstroom, two suspects, aged 43 and 25, were apprehended in the Central Business District (CBD).

Private security personnel discovered the pair carrying bags containing a variety of items, including live rifle ammunition and a BB gun.

The suspects are set to face charges before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 2 January 2024.

Additional Potchefstroom Arrest: Routine patrols lead to seizure

On the same day, during routine patrols in Potchefstroom, police arrested a 29-year-old man for unlawful possession of ammunition.

A search of the individual’s residence uncovered four 9mm ammunition rounds. The suspect, failing to provide a reasonable account, will appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 2 January 2024.

“The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant Sello Kwena lauded all members involved for their vigilance that led to the arrests and seizures,” read the statement.
