COVID-19: ‘Nationally we have exited the third wave’ says NICD as SA records 578 new cases

South Africa recorded 578 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, 27 September. Unfortunately, 164 more people succumbed to the disease.

South Africa recorded more than 500 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, 27 September, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 15 350 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 3.8%, down from yesterday’s 5.0% rate.


The 578 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Monday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 47 493. Unfortunately, 164 more people died of COVID-19-related complications, according to the NICD, bringing the death toll to 87 216.

“Nationally we have exited the third wave according to the current definition. The national 7-day moving average of daily case numbers, positivity rate and testing rate continue to decrease, with sustained decreases seen in all provinces,” said the NICD.

There were 85 people admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment within the latest testing cycle. The 255 private and 409 public hospitals reporting to the NICD now have 6931 patients admitted.

“The total number of cases today (n= 578) is lower than yesterday (n= 967) and lower than the average number of new cases per day over the 7 preceding days (n= 1 912),” said the NICD

“The 7-day moving average daily number of cases has decreased.”


The majority of the cases identified on Monday were found in KwaZulu-Natal (22%), Gauteng (19%) and the Western Cape (16%).

Free State followed with 15%, while the Eastern Cape accounted for 8% and the Northern Cape had 6%. Mpumalanga (4%) and Limpopo (2%) rounded off the list.

The list below shows the new COVID-19 cases identified by province, the bracketed number is the number of cases detected on the previous day:

  • Eastern Cape – 50 cases (169);
  • Free State – 86 cases (95);
  • Gauteng – 108 cases (82);
  • KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) – 126 cases (272);
  • Limpopo – 9 cases (10);
  • Mpumalanga – 24 cases (69);
  • North West – 48 cases (81);
  • Northern Cape – 35 cases (74);;
  • Western Cape – 92 cases (115); and
  • Unallocated – 0 cases.
