Gauteng public schools are gearing up to welcome students back on Wednesday, 17 January 2024, marking the official commencement of Term 1 for the academic year.

Unlike previous years, the 2024 calendar will not witness the traditional division of schools into inland and coastal clusters.

“Gauteng public schools will officially reopen for Term 1 on Wednesday, 17 January 2024,” said Gauteng Department of Education.

Historical school clusters caused varied reopening dates

In the past, schools across South Africa were categorised into two clusters. The inland group included Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the North West, while the coastal cluster encompassed the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape, and the Western Cape. This division often led to staggered reopening dates for schools in the respective clusters.

The 2024 academic year, however, introduces a significant change by unifying the school calendar. Term 1 kicks off on 17 January, followed by Term 2 on 2 April, Term 3 on 9 July, and finally, Term 4 on 25 September.

Unifying education for synchronised academics

This streamlined approach aims to create a more cohesive educational experience, allowing all regions to synchronise their academic activities without the previous disparities in start dates.
