Some people just never learn: A man with a history in drug smuggling, was recently arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, at the OR Tambo International Airport. This is after he was caught attempting to smuggle drugs on a flight to Dubai.

The Hawks’ spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu says they had received intelligence from the Boarder Movement Control at the airport on Tuesday, 15 February 2022, about a convicted drug mule who was reported to have been travelling to India through Dubai with an Emirates flight.

PREVIOUSLY CONVICTED DRUG MULE DUE IN COURT

The man is expected to make an appearance before the Kempton Park Regional court on Thursday, 17 February 2022 on several charges including dealing in drugs, Drugs and Drug trafficking Act, and contravention of the Customs and Excise Act.

The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation pounced on the man, presumably before he was to board his flight.

“Authorities searched both the accused and his luggage while detained for questioning. Police recovered 5,4 kilograms of suspected heroine inside a secret compartment of his luggage, concealed with black plastic bags with an estimated street value of R4 million. The ex-offender was immediately arrested and charged. He is expected to appear in court tomorrow and investigation continues”

According to the Hawks, it was learnt that the suspect was previously convicted for attempted drug smuggling back in 2020. He was handed a suspended sentence, but how exactly lucky will he be this time around?

“Authorities established that the ex-offender was found guilty on a count of fraud and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment which was wholly suspended for 5 years on conditions that he is not found guilty of the same offence. Upon arrival, the investigation team positively identified and linked the ex-offender with a similar incident that occurred in March 2020 at the same premises”
