BREAKING: Cyril Ramaphosa retains ANC Presidency

Cyril Ramaphosa was re-elected as the President of the ANC at the 55th National Elective Conference on Monday. Paul Mashatile won as Deputy President.

Cyril Ramaphosa was re-elected as ANC President at the party’s 55th National Elective Conference in Nasrec, Johannesburg on Monday, 19 December, paving the way for a potential second term as president of South Africa.

RAMAPHOSA ELECTED PRESIDENT

ANC Electoral Committee Head, Kgalema Motlanthe, said 4384 votes were cast even though there were 4436 eligible voters at the conference.

“Two ballots were confiscated because of those two voters were caught taking photographs of their ballots.

“They were reported to SAPS and upon realising that they may end up with criminal records they pleaded with security to revoke their voting status,” said Motlanthe.

Ramaphosa went up against former Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize for the position of President and won by 579 votes. There were four spoilt ballots and seven abstentions.

Result:

  • Ramaphosa – 2476 votes
  • Mkhize – 1897 votes

For Deputy President, there were 10 spoiled ballots and 23 abstentions. Former ANC Treasurer-General Paul Mashatile won the election with 2178 votes. He beat Ramaphosa’s preferred Deputy President candidate Oscar Mabuyane who scored 1858 votes and Ronald Lamola came third with 315 votes.

For National Chairperson, Gwede Mantashe just about retained his position beating Stanley Mathabatha by 44 votes (2062 votes to 2018). David Masondo came third with 280 votes.

For Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula won with 1692 votes to Phumulo Masualle’s 1590 votes. Mdumiseni Ntuli came third with 1080 votes.

For the position of First Deputy Secretary-General, Nomvula Mokonyane beat Tina Joemat-Pettersson by 50 votes (2195 votes to 2145).

For Second Deputy Secretary-General, Maropene Ramokgopa came out on top with 2373 votes to Ronalda Nolumango’s 1948 votes.

For Treasurer-General, Gwen Ramokgopa won with 1809 votes. The outgoing ANC spokesperson fell short with 1652 votes and Benjani Chauke and Masina Mzwandile came third and fourth with 590 votes and 281 votes, respectively.
