Social media images of a woman allegedly “beaten to a pulp” by her detective husband have caught the attention of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

CASE AGAINST BRAKPAN COP ALREADY UNDERWAY

IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping clarified that the woman was previously assaulted by her husband, who is stationed at the Brakpan SAPS in Gauteng

The husband was arrested and released on bail by the Protea Magistrate’s Court on 2 August 2022. “The bail conditions were that he should not be in contact with the victim,” said Suping.

The woman reportedly attempted to withdraw the case. The State, however, declined the request and informed her that Gender Based Violence and Femicide cases could not be withdrawn.

POLICE WATCHDOG LOOKING TO REVOKE BAIL

The Brakpan detective is due in court again on 27 March.

“Based on the latest images on social media, IPID has contacted the victim and will ensure that she opens another case against her partner. The new information will be used to apply to court to revoke his bail,” said the IPID spokesperson.

IPID denounced GBV as a scourge in South Africa and urged victims not to withdraw cases.
