Boksburg explosion: DPP deciding whether to prosecute driver or company

The investigation has concluded, leaving the decision of whom to prosecute in the hands of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Forty-one people died as a result of a devastating fuel tanker explosion in Boksburg, Gauteng, on 24 December 2022. The truck, which was transporting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), got stuck under a bridge near the Tambo Memorial Hospital.

Boksburg investigation Complete, DPP to Decide Prosecution Target

The truck driver was arrested but was later released due to insufficient evidence. The investigation is complete, and Gauteng police are waiting for a decision from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

According to SABC News, the police said the DPP is deciding whether to prosecute the trucking company or the driver.

Mbuso Khumalo, the Deputy Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, said the investigating officers visited the driver. He is somewhere in KwaZulu-Natal and not well, and unable to drive.

“We are waiting for the feedback on the Public Prosecutor to tell us whether to prosecute or not to prosecute. If there is something to be attended by the police, we will also attend,” said the policeman to the public broadcaster.
