Shocking conveyor belt accident at mine claims four lives

Four men were killed and two others injured in a conveyor belt accident at a mine in Balfour, Mpumalanga, on Thursday.

The Mpumalanga police have opened an inquest after four men were killed in a conveyor belt accident at a mine in Balfour. Two other men sustained injuries in the accident.

CONVEYOR BELT ACCIDENT IN BALFOUR

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the “shocking incident” was being attended to police by the police and a rescue team.

“It is suspected that a mine conveyor belt fell, resulting in the death of the four male persons meanwhile, two others are said to have sustained some injuries. The injured were taken to hospital for medical treatment,” said Mohlala.

The conveyor belt accident occurred at approximately 11:45 on Thursday. The circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be established, according to the police spokesperson.

The identities of the victims have also not been confirmed as yet. “An inquest with regard to the death of the victims will be investigated. More information will be provided as details come forth,” said Mohlala.

The Mpumalanga police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, offered her condolences to the bereaved families and wished the survivors a speedy recovery.

“The General further called for calm regarding this incident as the event unfolds,” said the police spokesperson.
