The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that the deputy principal of Realogile High School in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, was stabbed by a learner.

According to the department’s spokesperson Steve Mabona, the pupil had been called into the office for misbehaving and at some point, returned with a pair of scissors.

“The deputy principal of Realogile High School was allegedly stabbed by a Grade 11 learner at the school on Wednesday, 14 September 2022. Reports state that the learner was called into the office that day for reported misconduct. He allegedly stormed out the office and returned with two pairs of scissors, with which he began chasing and assaulting both the principal and deputy principal,” Mabona added.

The deputy principal sustained injuries and was rushed to a medical facility for urgent care. He has since managed to make a recovery.

ALEXANDRA PUPILS CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY

The Gauteng Department of Education says chaos ensued, in the wake of the deputy principal’s stabbing, as Alexandra learners in different schools took to the streets to voice their concern over lack of safety in the classroom.

“Reports allege that learners from Realogile High School ran amok in Alexandra on Thursday morning, marching to five other high schools in the area, removing learners from their classes and mobilising them to join their march. All this in solidarity of their deputy principal, who was allegedly stabbed by a learner with a pair of scissors on school premises. More so, learners were also demanding for safety at their schools”

The department says police managed to restore calm and that matriculants, who were writing a preliminary examination at the time, were not affected by this unrest and successfully wrote their exams. MEC Panyaza Lesufi has condemned both the demonstrations and the deputy principal’s stabbing.
