Body of an infant discovered at a dumping site in Mpumalanga

A woman discovered a body of an infant with the umbilical cord still attached at a dumping site in Mpumalanga.

Mpumalanga police are investigating a case of concealment of death following the gruesome discovery of an infant at a dumping site in Mogononong at Siyabuswa. 

The infant was discovered on Friday, 25 August 2023 around 12:00. 


South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said a certain woman whilst collecting recycling materials at the dumping site, noticed a body of a new born baby with the umbilical cord still attached. 

Mohlala said the woman then reported the matter to the authorities and a case was opened for investigation. The infant’s mother, who is also a suspect, has not yet been located.

Police have since urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspect to call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP. 

“All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,” he said.

In a recent incident, skeletal remains of a baby were recovered in a bush by children who were playing. 

The remains were discovered in Hilltop Drive in Tea Estate, Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal in June.

According to private security, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the discovery was made by children playing near an informal area. They informed their parents who contacted RUSA for assistance. 

RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram said their members were dispatched at approximately 09:21 and on arrival were led several metres on an unpaved pathway.

“Reaction officers were directed to a bush where the location of the skull was pointed out. A packet that was tied was recovered near the skull. Several bones were located in the packet,” he said. 

The scene was reportedly handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.
