Body of missing hiker found in Silvermine Dam

The body was identified by family members.

The body of a 69-year-old male regular hiker was found floating in the Silvermine Dam in the Central Section of the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) on Saturday morning, 27 March 2021.

The hiker went missing on Sunday 21 March after an afternoon trip after lunch to the National Park. His wife filed a missing person report when he didn’t return.

A search party found his clothes at the Silvermine Dam. His vehicle, along with other personal items was found nearby. However, a source revealed that his car key was still missing.

As reported by TNMP, the body was found floating in the dam. Park Manager Frans Rooyen said “the family has positively identified and confirmed that it is indeed the body of Mr. Mike Reilly.”

The Park’s management team also expressed their condolences to Mr Reilly’s family during this difficult time. In addition, the team also thanked all parties involved with the search.

“We would like to express our gratitude to the TMNP Rangers including SAPS Diving Unit, Metro Rescue Unit, City of Cape Town Fire Department Diving Unit, and Working on Fire team for their dedication and hard work during this time”.

Silvermine Dam to open soon

The team thanks users for being patient while the park closed temporarily as the search expanded to other areas of the park. The team will communicate in due course when operations will resume.
