Police are investigating the death of an elderly couple who were found dead in their bathtub at a retirement village in Gqeberha on Sunday 18 April.

A caregiver reportedly became suspicious after she didn’t see the Gqeberha couple since Thursday. The couple has since been identified as Anthony John Christopher, 81, and Margaret Anne Christopher, 79.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu the caregiver made the grisly discovery at 7:00 on Sunday.

“It is alleged that at about 7:00, a caregiver went to check on the couple, aged 79 and 81, at their retirement village home in Park Drive. The caregiver became suspicious as the couple was last seen on Thursday, 15 April 2021. When she arrived with the security, they opened the house and found the couple lying in the bathtub. The woman, 79-years-old sustained multiple stab wounds while the male, 81 years old had no signs of any injuries.”

According to the Herald, the couple were private people who kept to themselves. An employee at the village reportedly told the publication, that the elderly couple lived at the St George’s Park village for about a year.

“They kept to themselves a lot. It was always just the two of them. Even though some residents do visit one another, I had never seen the couple visit anyone. They were always indoors and if they went anywhere, they would go together,” the employee told the Herald.

Police said nothing was taken from the house and there were no signs of forced entry.

“Post mortems have been done this morning (Monday) reports are awaited. Police do not suspect any foul play in respect of the death of Anthony Christopher,” said Naidu. The investigation is ongoing.
