The police in the Eastern Cape have launched a manhunt for the suspects allegedly involved in a murder that took place in Bethelsdorp on Wednesday, 10 November.  The body of a 41-year-old man was found in a vehicle with several gunshot wounds.

POLICE INVESTIGATING BOOYSENS PARK SHOOTING

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said that members of the Anti-Gang Unit responded to a shooting incident at the corners of Stanford Road and Bloemendal Road in Booysens Park at approximately 11:30 on Wednesday.

“On arrival, the members found a black convertible Audi parked at the bus stop with the body of Sakhumzi Makhonxa, 41, in the driver’s seat with multiple gunshot wounds, said Janse van Rensburg.

According to the police report, Sakhumzi reportedly parked his vehicle at the bus stop and took a phone call. This is when a silver Datsun X trail pulled up near the vehicle and several gunshots were fired from inside the silver vehicle towards the Audi.

“The vehicle sped down Bloemendal Road towards Old Uitenhage Road,” said the police spokesperson. The vehicle was later found abandoned on the Old Uitenhage Road in the direction of Despatch.

Sakhumzi sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and died at the scene. It was later established that the silver vehicle used in the shooting was reported stolen in October 2021 in the Mount Road policing area. The vehicle has been impounded as part of the investigation.

“The Provincial Organized Crime Investigation in Gqeberha are investigating a case of murder. The motive for the murder is yet to be established,” said Janse van Rensburg.
