The Department of Basic Education published the 2023 school calendar which began for some provinces last Wednesday, while learners in the rest of the country returned to the classroom today.

As is always the case, traffic ramps up on school days – so best to avoid roads heading towards school locations!

The 2023 school year will comprise 199 school days across the four terms, with 32 days set aside for school holidays and eight public holidays in between.

Meanwhile, the matric class of 2022 don’t have long to wait until their results are published.

Education minister Angie Motshekga announced this week that the matric results for the class of 2022 will be announced on 19 January 2023, and distributed by schools on 20 January.

Dates for the school terms are as follows:

Inland schools

  • Term 1: 11 January to 24 March
  • Term 2: 12 April to 23 June
  • Term 3: 18 July to 29 September
  • Term 4: 10 October to 13 December

Coastal schools

  • Term 1: 18 January to 31 March
  • Term 2: 12 April to 23 June
  • Term 3: 18 July to 29 September
  • Term 4: 10 October to 13 December
