The festive season has drawn to a close and life begins to return to normal, there is still a few weeks left of the school holidays. This year however, there are a few changes to the start of the school year.

For the first time, the Department of Basic Education has done away with the staggered start of the school year starting this year and will continue in 2025 and 2026.

As was the norm, inland schools (Gauteng,Free State, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo) opened the school year a week ahead of coastal provinces (KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern, Western and Northern Cape).

This year however schools across the country will begin the school year on the same day on Wednesday, 17 January 2024.

The first term will continue until Wednesday, 20 March 2024, and have a total of 46 school days, with no public holidays interrupting the school term. School will then reopen two weeks later on 3 April 2024.

Parents of learners who are yet to apply for grade one and eight for 2024 are urged to submit an application for only one school.

According to the Gauteng Department of Education, learners will be automatically enrolled in the chosen school.

Documents are not to be submitted online and parents will be required to submit the documents directly to the school.
