As the new academic calendar kicks starts today, Wednesday, 17 January, some children will have the privilege of donning new uniforms, while the most vulnerable will continue to suffer from envy.

However, councillor Theo Doyle from the City of Johannesburg wants to change this phenomenon once and for all, with a vision for all children to look the same despite challenging backgrounds.

“I can relate. I know what it is like to drink a lot of tea not because I like it but just to avoid getting hungry. I know what is to sleep on the floor not because I liked it but because there wasn’t much. Growing up, I know what it is to pretend to be ill when it was time to go out with friends because I didn’t have much to show,” Councillor Doyle recalled in a post on Facebook.

THE MISSION TO ASSIST THE CHILDREN

“But that process made me who I am today, and I’m grateful for that process that’s why I will make it my mission this year to reach out to organizations like Bathu, Ren-Form CC, Hope SA Foundation, Shoprite South Africa and many more to build partnerships in order to assist the most vulnerable with basics like school shoes, stationery and food supply where possible,” he committed.
