Areas to AVOID if you’re a MOTORIST in Durban

Planning on visiting Durban soon? Be vigilant in the following top ten hijacking hotspots in the City. Umlazi tops the list

Durban also known as South Africa’s playground, has revealed itself as one of the most dangerous places to own a car in KwaZulu-Natal.

In the recently released crime statistics by Police Minister Bheki Cele, KwaZulu-Natal ranked second in the country behind Gauteng with the highest number of hijackings between April and June 2023.

KZN ACCOUNTS FOR 15,2 OF THE COUNTRY’S HIJACKING CASES

Of the 5448 hijacking in the country 835 took place in KZN with 318 of them occurring in the EThekwini Metro.

Apart from Empangani which came in fifth place in the province with 30 hijackings, all other hijacking hotspots in the top 10 in KwaZulu-Natal were reported in Durban.

Umlazi township just south of Durban, has two police stations in the top ten. Umlazi police station and Bhekithemba police station in BB Section of the township reported 55 and 39 hijackings respectively in the three months of reporting.

Bhekithemba more than doubled the number of its hijacking cases going up from 16 cases in the same period last to 39 this year.

Ntuzuma in the north of Durban came in third place with just 37 incidents reported.

IMPROVEMENT IN PINETOWN

Pinetown police station, despite making it into the top 10, saw the largest decline in hijacking cases between April and June 2022 and the same period this year.

Last year the station reported 63 cases whereas this year there were just 25 cases- a difference of 38.
